Activity overview
The Stargazing & astronomy activities at Lantau Mountain Camp successfully merged celestial exploration with cultural and ecological education. Held across two sessions (indoor workshops at CUHK and on-site tours near Lantau Mountain Camp), the program engaged over 60 participants, including students, amateur astronomers, and stargazing enthusiasts. Through telescope-assisted stargazing, nocturnal wildlife observation, and discussions on light pollution, the activity highlighted the interplay between astronomy and environmental stewardship. This initiative transformed Lantau’s high-altitude landscape into an open-air classroom under the stars.
Key achievements and value
Interdisciplinary learning
Participants gained hands-on experience in astronomy (e.g., constellation identification, telescope use) while understanding Lantau’s cultural narrative through the lens of the Caretaker’s Hut and historical structures
Conservation advocacy
The program emphasized low-impact tourism. Participants learned to minimize their environmental footprint while engaging in recreational activities
Community building
Collaborative activities bridged gaps between the public, conservationists and astronomers, creating a network of advocates for Lantau’s sustainable future

Immersive telescopic observation
Visual telescopes and smart telescopes enabled participants to capture deep-sky objects with astrophotography
Cultural integration
Storytelling juxtaposed historical photos of Lantau Mountain Camp with current skies, emphasizing the site’s evolving relationship with nature
Ecological engagement
A guided night workshop introduced participants to indigenous species, linking light pollution and astronomy to terrestrial biodiversity
Interactive Tools
Astronomy telescope and audio guide enhanced engagement, while booklets provided key takeaways
